Sergey Akhunov
Biography
Composer Sergey Akhunov draws on eclectic sources, including early music and a system of Pythagorean correspondences between numbers and sounds. In 2005, Akhunov decided to focus exclusively on writing orchestral and chamber music, and that year, he made an extended visit to the U.S., undertaking independent studies of composition by immersing himself in the collections of the Loeb Music Library at Harvard University. Soon, he finished a chamber work, the string quartet Floridae; it was premiered in 2006 in Moscow by the Romantic Quartet. Akhunov wrote two piano trios for the ensemble of violinist Julia Igonina, cellist Rustam Komachkov, and pianist Natalia Ardasheva: Big Elegy to John Cage and Trio in Memory of Irina Kovaleva. In 2023, Akhunov and Igonina reunited on the latter's album Jazz, which featured Akhunov's composition of the same name.
